How is mindfulness beneficial?
The vast majority of studies on mindfulness, as both a therapeutic intervention and as a tool to aid everyday well-being, have been done with adults, but in recent years researchers have begun to explore how it might be applied to teenagers and even to very young, pre-school children. The results to date in this emerging field suggest that mindfulness training is both feasible and beneficial for children across a wide range of ages and contexts (Burke, 2010).
Mindfulness training has at least five broad beneficial effects, according to Felicia Huppert, Professor of Psychology of the University of Cambridge’s Well-Being Institute. Specifically, mindfulness promotes:
- increased sensory awareness;
- greater cognitive control;
- enhanced regulation of emotions;
- acceptance of transient thoughts and feelings; and
- the capacity to regulate attention.
Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has demonstrated that recurrently experiencing positive emotions simultaneously broadens our sensory awareness – creating further opportunities for sensory savouring – and also builds psychological and emotional resilience
Meditation is about looking inside and discovering our inner strengths, it helps us to transform our day-to-day life into a better, more meaningful and more fulfilling existence. Meditation enhances focus, creativity and relaxation, and daily mediation will supercharge your mind, which means you will be able to accomplish more in less time and you will have the ability to focus on a task and block out any distractions making you more effective and efficient. The other benefits are:
- Creativity: you can become more effective at problem-solving
- Clears your mind to focus on one task at a time
- Increases your energy and reduces fatigue
- Reduces stress
- Increased motivation
- New and fresh perspectives on day to day life and tasks that need to be completed
Studies show that advanced meditators have a high “mind brain development trait”. People with this trait show an eagerness to learn, are open-minded, calm and playful. Their logical thinking and planning is enhanced and their brain resources are utilised more economically. In simple terms people who meditate are able to focus easily and remain “in the zone” for longer periods of time.
The quality of your life is largely determined by the quality of the mental states you live in day to day – states like gratitude, love, anger, happiness, fear and excitement. There are two main ways to control your state of mind. Either by controlling the way you use your physical body, or by controlling your focus of attention and the way you interpret it. What happens in your life does not determine how you feel? How you feel determines what happens in your life ………
